Tottenham Refuse to Sell Micky van de Ven Despite Liverpool Interest

Tottenham Hotspur are standing firm over Micky van de Ven, with Football Insider reporting that the club have no intention of selling the defender beyond the January transfer window, despite Liverpool’s admiration.

The Dutchman, 25, has become a key figure under Roberto De Zerbi and was recently named club captain. Andoni Iraola’s side could revisit their interest next year as they look to bolster their defence.

Spurs hold all the cards in the van de Ven saga

Spurs acted early to protect their asset, tying van de Ven to a new contract in August that runs until 2031. That leaves Tottenham under no pressure to negotiate.

On the pitch, the Netherlands international has mostly featured at centre-back this season, where his recovery pace and ability to defend the space behind a high line have been invaluable. He has also shown his versatility by covering at left-back when needed. Handing him the armband underlines how central he is to De Zerbi’s plans.

Why Liverpool keep pushing for the defender

Liverpool’s interest makes sense. Iraola wants a long-term defensive foundation, and van de Ven’s speed suits a side that defends aggressively and pushes up the pitch.

The Reds also have question marks at left-back, where Milos Kerkez has struggled to nail down a regular place. Van de Ven could offer an alternative there, although central defence remains his natural home.

Liverpool added Ronald Araujo late in the summer, yet van de Ven would bring extra athleticism and flexibility, while Virgil van Dijk’s career is entering its later stages.

Our view on van de Ven’s future

Admiration and availability are very different things, and Tottenham have done the hard work by extending his deal.

In my opinion, selling would be a mistake. Van de Ven is entering his prime, has emerged as a leader and suits the demands of modern Premier League defending. Liverpool may well have to look elsewhere.
