Virgil van Dijk has become a reported target for two European giants as doubts persist over his long-term Liverpool future. Jose Mourinho is said to be weighing up a January approach, while AC Milan continue to be linked with the Dutchman.
Why Real Madrid Are Interested in Van Dijk
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Mourinho is considering a move as Real Madrid review their defensive options before the winter window opens. The 35-year-old is contracted at Anfield until June 2027, yet the lack of clarity over his future could open the door for Los Blancos.
Madrid are hardly short of centre-backs, with Antonio Rudiger, Dean Huijsen and Ibrahima Konate all on the books. Even so, early-season lapses in concentration and errors in build-up play have reportedly prompted Mourinho to look for a more experienced presence.
Rudiger is also in the final 12 months of his deal, which adds another layer to the situation. Van Dijk’s organisational skills, aerial strength and positional sense would offer something quite different to Madrid’s younger options.
