Arsenal and Chelsea Eye Florian Wirtz as Liverpool Future Falls Into Doubt
Liverpool Future in Doubt
Arsenal and Chelsea are reportedly weighing up moves for Florian Wirtz, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes, with the 23-year-old’s long-term future at Liverpool now uncertain heading into next summer.

The Germany international joined from Bayer Leverkusen in a club-record deal, yet his Anfield career has been underwhelming so far. Wirtz managed seven goals and nine assists in 49 appearances during his debut campaign, figures that hide a lack of consistency. He has also struggled to find his rhythm this term under Andoni Iraola, although Liverpool remain optimistic he will turn a corner.
Even so, the Reds are said to be preparing for offers in upcoming transfer windows. Bayern Munich, long-time admirers, are expected to make their interest known again, though a January approach has reportedly been ruled out.
Why Chelsea Could Make Sense
Chelsea’s link is the more logical of the two. Xabi Alonso, who now manages the Blues, worked with Wirtz at Leverkusen, where the pair formed a hugely productive partnership. Chelsea’s attacking approach also resembles that Leverkusen blueprint, which might help Wirtz settle quickly.
Nevertheless, the rumours remain speculative, and everything hinges on whether Liverpool are prepared to sell a player they paid so heavily for.
Arsenal Face an Uphill Task
Arsenal are in a different position. Mikel Arteta already has plenty of options in the areas Wirtz favours, so a bid would be opportunistic rather than essential. The Gunners are expected to track his progress this season, but Liverpool are highly unlikely to strengthen a Premier League title rival.
Chelsea the Most Credible Destination
Chelsea look the most credible Premier League destination, given the Alonso connection. Arsenal’s interest feels more like routine monitoring than genuine intent. Bayern remain the likeliest suitors if Liverpool do decide to cash in, and a sale after only two seasons would be a considerable admission that the original investment has not paid off. A big improvement before summer could yet change the entire picture.
