Tottenham Battle Nottingham Forest and Dortmund for Brazilian Goalkeeper Otavio

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly preparing a move for Cruzeiro goalkeeper Otavio, with a deal expected to be explored next year.

Competition for the 20-Year-Old

German outlet Fussball News claims Spurs and Nottingham Forest are leading the chase for the Brazil international. Borussia Dortmund, Porto and Napoli are also said to be admirers, with Dortmund reportedly making an enquiry. Cruzeiro are believed to want between €25m and €30m.

Who Is Otavio?

Otavio came through the ranks at Cruzeiro and has established himself in the first team this season. He has made 33 appearances, kept eight clean sheets and conceded 38 goals. He also earned his senior Brazil debut during the latest international break.

Why Spurs Need a Goalkeeper

Antonin Kinsky has been first choice since Guglielmo Vicario left on loan in the summer, but his early-season form has been shaky. Talk of Martin Dubravka stepping in has been played down, though it hints at concern over the current pecking order.

Otavio’s numbers make him an interesting alternative. He has prevented 5.23 goals this season based on shot quality faced, and his comfort with the ball at his feet suits a side wanting to dominate possession.

Our Take

Spurs clearly need long-term stability between the sticks, and Otavio fits the profile. However, with several clubs circling and Cruzeiro setting a high price, this could become a costly bidding contest. Dortmund’s early approach may also give them an advantage if they move quickly.
