Chelsea Set to Cash In on Robert Sanchez Amid Como Loan

Chelsea are working towards a permanent sale of Robert Sanchez next summer, even though the goalkeeper is currently on loan at Como for the 2026/27 campaign.

Sanchez left Stamford Bridge on deadline day after a torrid opening to the season left him well down the goalkeeping pecking order under Xabi Alonso. His temporary switch to Serie A does not include an obligation-to-buy clause, meaning a return to west London remains technically possible once the loan expires. Despite that, the Blues’ preference is reportedly to secure a permanent exit rather than welcome him back.

Why Chelsea Have Moved On

The 28-year-old joined from Brighton & Hove Albion for £25 million in August 2023 and went on to make 112 appearances, helping the club lift both the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. However, his form dipped sharply in the Premier League, and Chelsea moved swiftly to bring in Emiliano Martinez on a three-year deal, with the option of a further season. Add 21-year-old Mike Penders into the mix, and it’s clear Chelsea see their long-term future elsewhere in goal.

A Fresh Start in Italy

For Sanchez, Como represents a genuine chance to rebuild momentum away from the scrutiny of Stamford Bridge. He made his first start against Parma after initially being overlooked, and manager Cesc Fabregas has spoken positively about the competition he brings to the squad, praising his experience at the top level.

In my view, this arrangement suits everyone involved. Sanchez gets a proper opportunity to reestablish himself away from the pressure that clearly affected him in London, while Chelsea gain breathing space to build around Martinez and Penders without any lingering uncertainty. A strong campaign in Serie A could easily turn into a tidy summer sale, closing the book on a spell that never quite worked out for either party.
