The defending champions Real Madrid beat Sporting Lisbon 2-1 on Wednesday evening – with the Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo scored a record-breaking late free-kick against his former club.
The three-time Ballon d’Or winner started his football career with the Portuguese outfit, for whom he racked up 25 league appearances before joining Manchester United in 2003.
The 31-year-old struck a brilliant equaliser in the final seconds on their home turf at Bernabeu. It was Ronaldo’s 12th free-kick goal in his Champions League tournament, setting up a new record for the competition.
